Patrick's update

Patrick Dougherty - General Manager Asset Development GroupDear private sector partners,

We’re heading into the final stretch of the working year and what a year it’s been!

Large-scale urban renewal projects are underway now in Auckland on Housing New Zealand (HNZ) land. HNZ identifies sites to be developed for state housing, and makes recommendations on future housing typologies before passing onto our subsidiary, HLC (formerly Hobsonville Land Company), to progress.

HLC then leads the master-planning, land development and land sales’ activities, along with local placemaking, communications and engagement. HLC already has master-planning underway for Northcote, Mt Roskill and Owairaka and new homes are being delivered in Northcote.

You can now track progress on individual Auckland Housing Programme developments - be they small, medium or large - on our website.

Elsewhere in the country, HNZ has development projects underway in areas such as Lower Hutt, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton and is developing plans for the likes of Palmerston North, Napier and Hastings.

All this activity means that we’re looking hard at how to cut costs and take time out of our construction timelines. You’ll read in this newsletter about our development of standard designs for new homes, as well as our increasing push to use pre-fabricated building techniques where possible.

These initiatives will mean less noise and disruption for the communities in which we operate, and also improve safety for our staff and contractors on-site.

In financial year 2016/17, HNZ undertook 150+ tenders for 1800+ residential units, including super lot sales. This volume is only set to escalate with an increasing number of multi-storey developments and multi-typology projects in our construction pipeline.

HNZ is looking to you, our development partners – present and future – to help us come up with innovations to help us build faster and at scale.
