Working together for whānau

13 February 2018

Housing New Zealand (HNZ) has been working with Te Tihi o Ruahine Whānau Ora Alliance (Te Tihi) a Maori navigator service delivery organisation that is designed to achieve better outcomes for whānau (families) living in Palmerston North.

Te Tihi engages with whānau living in HNZ homes through the Kainga Whānau Ora initiative, and works alongside them to connect with other agencies to ensure that they have pathways to education, training, employment and supports them to enhance family relationships. The initiative is working with up to 100 whānau. HNZ's role is to ensure the houses where whānau live are warm, dry safe, healthy and fit-for-purpose. Housing is seen as the cornerstone of the Initiative.

"We’re proud to have been part of this worthwhile initiative. It is a great example of multiple organisations and agencies using their respective skills and knowledge to improve outcomes for whānau," says Housing New Zealand Senior Leadership Representative Sharon.

Kāinga Whānau Ora has three main goals:

  1. All whānau live in structurally safe, warm, dry homes within flourishing communities in Palmerston North
  2. These same whānau have access to workshops and educational opportunities which increases knowledge and skills to make improved decisions
  3. Whānau live in loving and respectful relationships free of violence.

There are direct benefits to both HNZ and our tenants through participation. For HNZ its families benefit from warm, safe housing and support to reach their full potential. There is also the opportunity for HNZ to learn more about its service delivery. For the tenants it’s understanding their housing aspirations and addressing what’s preventing them from achieving their goals.
