A group of Housing New Zealand volunteers have lent their time and lunch-making skills to Eat My Lunch.
A couple of weeks ago a small cross-team group (Helena, Rosita, Mandy, Sue, Nick, Mark, Barbara, Emily, Matt, and Kieran) took some time out of their busy schedules to give back to the community and help kiwi kids in need by volunteering with Eat My Lunch (Vo-lunch-teering, you might say).
Beginning in 2015, Eat My Lunch is a “social enterprise” that provides lunches to school aged children with a “buy one, give one” system. With every meal ordered, Eat My Lunch provides a second healthy lunch for a kiwi kid who might otherwise go without. They give 2,600+ lunches a day to 82 schools in Auckland, Hamilton, and Wellington. They have provided 870,000 lunches over the last three years.
Originally starting as a team building exercise as for the wider Development Strategy team, the exercise was extended to include the wider Asset Development Group team as well. It was the first time they had all participated in such an activity as a whole team. The decision to volunteer at Eat My Lunch was made as it felt like a fitting choice, being closest to what Housing New Zealand does, helping those in vulnerable situations. Also after seeing the list of schools that Eat My Lunch caters to it was noted that many of the kids were also children of our tenants.
The volunteering served as a great opportunity for the cross-team cohort to not only help out children in Auckland but to also strengthen the bonds among colleagues. We encourage all teams to consider volunteer work as a way to build team relationships.
