The Johnson family at the Police Dog Training Centre in Trentham23 May 2018
A day-out cuddling cute puppies was the perfect distraction for a family going through some tough times.
The Johnson family came to the attention of Tenancy Manager, DeNeen when Stacey called to say she was struggling to pay her rent.
When DeNeen probed further she found out the family was doing it tough due to Chris’ on-going cancer treatment.
“This family have always paid their rent on time and when I found out Chris was undergoing treatment I wanted to do something to show them we cared,” says DeNeen.
DeNeen quickly got in contact with a range of support services to see if there was any assistance to help the family, as Chris is unable to work and Stacey has had to reduce her hours to support Chris through his treatment.
The Porirua office then pulled together a care package for the family and organised a Doggie Day Out to the Police Dog Training Centre in Trentham thanks to Asset Manager Gordon’s police dog connections.
The Doggie Day Out was an experience to remember says Stacey.
“Our family would like to thank Housing New Zealand for giving us some much needed down time together.”
For DeNeen and Gordon the outing was a chance to something nice for a lovely family who are going through a really tough time and managing the best they can.
“The family fieldtrip would not have lessened the impact of Chris’ cancer, but we hope it helped lighten the load for one day,” says DeNeen
