Tea and Tots taking off7 March 2018
A community initiative by Housing New Zealand has expanded after phenomenal interest and support from local parents and their families.
Its Tea and Tots programme was devised by local Tenancy Manager Zoe who works in the Broomfield and Hei Hei areas. Zoe was keen to demonstrate the kind of support Housing New Zealand can provide the local community.
As well as being a landlord, Housing New Zealand wants to continually immerse itself into the local community by supporting community programmes and other initiatives.
Zoe researched the idea of holding a monthly community gathering for parents and carers of young children.
The first session was held in the "126 on the corner" community hall last August and has quickly become a successful programme.
Zoe said the community feedback had been overwhelming and two volunteers, impressed with the programme and its aims, had offered to come on board.
This means the monthly programme is now a weekly gathering in the community.
It is not only locals who are supporting the programme – the Christchurch City Council has approved a $500 community grant so new toys can be bought for the group.
Zoe was thrilled with the grant and ongoing support from families.
"The objective of the group is to have our community mixing, meeting, supporting and having fun with one another. While this will involve Housing New Zealand tenants, the aim is to extend the invitation to the wider community as well."
Housing New Zealand Area Manager Angela applauded the initiative and said it was a great example of the organisation supporting its communities.
"This has been a fantastic initiative from Zoe and I’m also really pleased the community has welcomed the idea with open arms. This is another great example of the different ways Housing New Zealand can play a role in our communities."
