The first new state houses built in Nelson for around 15 years opened recently.
Four lucky tenants will soon be settled in their brand new one-bedroom units in Kawai Street, very near the hospital and a major bus route.
The units are designed to help meet the need for smaller homes in Nelson. They feature accessible bathrooms, generous storage and good onsite parking.
Neighbours, stakeholders, contractors and staff celebrated the opening on 26 September. Councillor Gaile Noonan, Chair of Nelson City Council’s Community Services, spoke at the ceremony. She thanked Housing New Zealand (HNZ) for recognising the urgent need for more state housing in Nelson, especially one and two bedroom units.
Earlier in the day Area Manager Dale and Stakeholder Manager Ray hosted a roadshow presentation for local stakeholders on the homes HNZ is building for people in the region.
The next day they presented to agencies in Greymouth, and met with the CEO and staff of Grey District Council. This is part of a roadshow series being taken around the country.
Three more new homes, each two-bedroomed, are due for completion in Nelson by the end of October.
