Ioana says her and her five children and partner feel blessed to have moved into their brand new warm and dry home on Chippendale Crescent in Birkdale.
“Our old house was cold, and my kids were always getting sick. Our new home is so warm we can sleep with the windows open,” she says.
After moving from their smaller home in Northcote, Ioana says her children are “loving it”. Her daughters are making the most of the big bathrooms and her sons are enjoying having their own bedrooms.
The family’s new home is one of 23 new state homes that were officially opened by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford last week.
Located in the high-demand area of Birkdale, the 18 two-bedroom and five four-bedroom homes on Chippendale Crescent have been designed to be warm and dry homes that meet the needs of families in the area.
In the wider Kaipatiki Local Board area, the demand for housing has been on the rise for a number of years. From December 2017, the number of families or individuals on the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) Housing Register has nearly doubled to about 150.
“Between this redevelopment, and two others on the same street, Housing New Zealand has transformed 12 state homes into 40 new two, three and four-bedroom homes for families in need,” says Mr Twyford.
“This is a very exciting time for the Birkdale area. These homes are just one part of a redevelopment project that has helped to transform the area into a thriving community for Auckland families of all different sizes and backgrounds.”
The homes are located in a highly desirable area for families near key services. It is close to a number of schools, the Beach Haven ferry to Auckland CBD, and is 4km from the Glenfield Mall.
Auckland currently has about 140 active construction sites as part of the Auckland Housing Programme.
“These homes are a great example of how Housing New Zealand is working hard to make Auckland a vibrant city for all,” says Mr Twyford.
As of February, the homes have been occupied by a diverse group of tenants from different areas of the North Shore and Central Auckland.
