Information for neighbours
If your house borders a Housing New Zealand Corporation property, there may be times when you might need to talk to us. The Customer Services Centre is your first point of contact for a range of enquiries you might have.

When you contact us, you will need to provide:
- your name, address and contact details
- the address of the Housing New Zealand in question
- the nature of your problem
- any other information you think we might need to know
We will contact you within 2 days of receiving your request.
There may be times when you need to work with our Property Management Services Team to have your request or issue worked through. They may require more information from you to help with the issue.

Property enquiries
You can contact us if you have the following property related enquiries:
- Ground issues
- Trees
- Storm damage
- Illegal structures
- Public Works Act
- Easements
- Drainage
- Resource Management Act Consents
- Partial land sales
- Fences
There may be times when a property is affected, directly or indirectly by water or a subsidence problem thought to originate from a Corporation property. Let us know if you suspect such an issue.
If trees, roots or branches cross the boundary line, they can be cut or trimmed to the boundary so long as it does not affect the whole tree.
You can let us know if there are trees on our property that require maintenance.
If you want us to carry out that maintenance, please contact us and provide the information listed above.
You can also get information about the maintenance of trees from your Citizen’s Advice Bureau or local council.
Let us know if a tree on our property damages your house as the result of a storm. You should contact your insurance company immediately. When you contact us, you will need to provide the information listed above along with your insurance company details.
If you want to let us know of a suspected illegal structure, or a suspected unauthorised alteration to Corporation property, you should contact us and advise us of the details of the structure or alteration along with the information listed above.
We will keep you informed of progress and any resolution.
Contact us for any matters relating to the Public Works Act.
You may need our consent for new, to make changes to existing, or to remove easements (for example telecommunications, right of way access or power).
You will need to provide in writing:
- your name, address and contact details
- the address of the property in question
- the address of the Corporation property
- a covering letter detailing your request
- a copy of the consent application
- a copy of the property title
- a copy of the site plans
- any other information you think we might need to know
When you have collected this information, email or send it to our Property Management Team.
If you need right of entry to our property to connect to an existing or new drain pipe, you will need to provide in writing:
- your name, address and contact details
- the address of the property in question
- address of the Corporation property
- a copy of the consent application
- a copy of the property title
- a covering letter outlining the request and the timeframe for the proposed works
- details of whether the drain is public or private and the method of installation (thrust or open trench)
- a copy of the site plan and site photographs.
When you have collected this information, please email or send it to our Property Management Team.
Please note that if your proposal is approved there may be a charge and/ or a bond which will be payable to Housing New Zealand.
Resource Management Act (RMA) consents
If you are the private owner of a property next to one of our houses, and have requested a change that requires RMA consent, we will need to know:
- your name, address and contact details
- the address of the property in question
- the address of the Corporation property
- the affected party form from your Territorial Local Authority
- copies of the resource consent application
- a copy of site and/or building plans
- any other information you think we might need to know
When you have collated this information, please email or send it to our Property Management Team.
If you want to purchase a portion of land owned by us you will need to advise in writing:
- your name, address and contact details
- the physical address of the land you want to buy
- a plan showing the subdivision/scheme plan, or line with width of easement
- the area involved (sq. m.)
- the zoning of the land
- the proposed use of the land to be purchased
- any other relevant features (e.g. contour)
When you have collected this information, please email or send it to our Property Management Team.
If your property borders our property and you have plans for the fence-line, we may consider contributing to the cost of a new fence or an improvement to an existing fence, but you'll need to give us written notice. The proposed fence should meet our minimum fencing specifications.
You will need to provide:
- your name and contact details.
- your address and the address of the Corporation property
- a diagram showing the boundary line/parts of the boundary line that you plan to replace or erect a new fence on.
- the type of fence that you intend to build (including how long and high, and the materials to be used)
- what the fence will cost and whether you want the Corporation to contribute and, if so, how much
- three quotes for the fencing work you want to have done.
When you have collected this information, please email or send it to our Property Management Team.
Once we receive your notice we will come and have a look at where you propose putting the fence. If we agree with the details of your notice, we will send you an acceptance letter within 21 working days. Otherwise, we will contact you to discuss your notice and any alternative options.
