Helping you with home ownership
If you’re interested in getting into your first home, we may be able to help.
Housing New Zealand offers a range of home ownership initiatives designed to assist New Zealanders into their first home.
You may be eligible for a low or no deposit loan through Welcome Home Loan scheme available from participating lenders, a home ownership course, or a KiwiSaver deposit subsidy for first-home buyers.
If you are a Housing New Zealand tenant, you may be able to buy your current house, and if you are an owner of multiple owned Māori land and wish to build on it, a Kāinga Whenua loan could get you there. Or if you are considering building your first home, then Gateway housing assistance could help you achieve this.
It is part of our role to help people make housing choices that work best for them. So if you would like to own your own home, we would like to talk to you about how we can help. Check out the options below for more details, or call us any time on 0508 935 266. Specific criteria apply.
Our home ownership initiatives include:
- Welcome Home First Steps
Before looking at home ownership options do you need to learn the ins and outs of buying your first home? We offer a free, online home ownership education course. - Welcome Home Loan
If you think you can afford regular mortgage payments but having trouble getting a deposit together, the Welcome Home Loan requires no or low deposits. Available through a range of lenders. - KiwiSaver
Are you a KiwiSaver member? KiwiSaver has two features that are designed to help you into your first home - the deposit subsidy or the savings withdrawal. - Kāinga Whenua loans
This helps Māori access finance to build, buy or relocate a home onto their multiple-owned ancestral land. You will be required to have an ancestral right to build on multiple-owned ancestral land. - Gateway
Wanting to build your first home but cannot afford both the land and the building costs at the outset? Gateway housing assistance enables first home buyers to defer paying for Crown and Housing New Zealand land for up to ten years. - Tenant home ownership
This is for Housing New Zealand tenants. Tenant home ownership gives our existing tenants in properties eligible for purchase the option to buy their home.
