FAQs

When will the contractor who's doing work on my house arrive?

If the job is urgent they'll be there within four hours. If it is important but doesn't affect your health or safety, they will contact you to arrange a time within two to three working days. If it is a general job, they will contact you within 10 working days.

Why are you coming to inspect my home?

We are committed to ensuring our rental homes are looked after and kept in good order. We regularly check their condition to see what maintenance we may need to do, or what repairs you may need to do.

How many days notice do I have to give if I want to move out?

Twenty one days. You can leave earlier but you may have to pay the rent for the whole period. Sometimes we are able to re-let the property before the 21 days is up, so you may not have to pay the full amount. Talk to a housing advisor on 0800 801 601.

Income-related rent is a government-funded rent subsidy. If you qualify for income-related rent and you live alone, your weekly rent will be 25 percent of your net (take-home) income up to the New Zealand Superannuation rate. If you earn more than this, 50 percent of your net income that is above the Superannuation rate will be included as rent. You cannot be charged more than the market rent for the property.

For all other households, income-related rent is 25 percent of your household's net income up to the married New Zealand Superannuation rate. If you earn over this, 50 percent of your net income above the married Superannuation rate will be included as rent. You cannot be charged more than the market rent for the property.

Can I paint my house, build a fence or knock out a wall?

You must have permission from your tenancy manager before you make any improvements or changes to your Housing New Zealand house or flat. Contact us on 0800 801 601 before you make any improvements or changes.

Can I keep a dog?

You can keep certified hearing or sight dogs, but you'll need written permission from your tenancy manager for any other dog. You also need to comply with local council regulations.

If there are pests like mice in my house will you get rid of them?

We can organise pest control for you, but you will need to pay. Pest control is listed under 'P' in the Yellow Pages.
