Q: Why do we need a New Zealand Housing Strategy?
A: The New Zealand Housing Strategy provides a vision and strategic direction for housing for the next 10 years. It seeks to address the many housing issues brought about by increasing demand and changes in the housing market, and a changing population.
Q: How does it fit with other strategies such as the New Zealand Health Strategy, New Zealand Disability Strategy, the National Energy Efficiency Conservation Strategy and the Sustainable Development Programme of Action?
A: The New Zealand Housing Strategy is consistent with other strategies developed by government in areas of social, economic and environmental policy. There has been on-going cross-referencing with these strategies and consultation with the responsible government agencies during development of the discussion document.
Q: How was the public able to participate in development of the New Zealand Housing Strategy?
A public consultation process was carried out. This involved the opportunity for people to make written submissions. There was also a series of stakeholder meetings, hui and fono throughout the country. Submissions were open to the general public.
Q: How was the discussion document developed?
The discussion document Building The Future: Towards A New Zealand Housing Strategy was prepared following consultation with a wide range of people. For example, community representatives and groups, Maori, industry, private sector, local councils and central government.
