Housing Improvements and Development
Design competition
The first social housing in New Zealand was built 100 years ago following a public design competition.
In May 2005, Housing New Zealand celebrated this heritage and invited architects and designers to design new state housing for future New Zealanders.
The competition - Housing New Zealanders 100 Years On - invited designs that responded to New Zealand's changing housing needs, greater cultural diversity, new building practices, materials and technologies.
Ninety seven people entered from across New Zealand and overseas. Entries were assessed by a panel of judges including national and international architectural and design experts.
The competition aimed to stimulate debate and to encourage more designers and architects to be involved in designing social housing.
Award categories:
The prize pool of $30,000 included an Urban Design Award ($12,500), a Housing Design Award ($12,500) and recognition for an Emerging Designer ($5,000).
The entries were of such a high standard it was impossible to pick one premier winner.
Instead, the judges decided to acknowledge a design that took a particularly innovative approach (the Judges' Premier Award).
Winning and highly commended entries are on display at Te Manawa, Palmerston North, until June 2006.
