Housing Improvements and Development

Auckland housing for older people

We are currently upgrading more than 1,500 housing units in Auckland, bought from Auckland City Council in 2003. At the time of purchase, about $75 million was committed to upgrading the units over five years.

The units are located in 53 sites across Auckland, including New Windsor Road (Blockhouse Bay), Symonds Street (Onehunga) and High Street (Otahuhu).

Many of the units were in good condition, however, some of the units were outdated and in poor condition. Upgrade work includes:

  • Refurbishment - improving bathrooms, kitchens, installing new floor coverings and painting interiors
  • Reconfiguration - converting small bed-sit units into larger one-bedroom homes. This often involves reconfiguring three bed-sit units into two single bedroom apartments
  • Redevelopment - building new units on vacant sites to replace units lost by reconfiguration or demolition of existing units, and completely rebuilding them.
Project progress:

As at 30 April, 2006, we had refurbished 435 units, reconfigured 256 bed-sits into 177 one-bedroom homes and built 61 new one-bedroom homes for older people at New Windsor Road, Blockhouse Bay.
