Community Renewal keep Rotorua beautiful
The Fordlands Community Renewal team was recognised in the annual "Keep Rotorua Beautiful" awards last Thursday, receiving a certificate of merit for their impressive work in the region. Kevin Winters, the Mayor of Rotorua, and his wife Sue presented the certificate and praised the team for their involvement in cleaning up Fordlands' streets and streams, promoting recycling at events, their fun days and their overall efforts in revitalising the region.
The awards are part of a larger programme that Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) runs each year. The organisation recognises the work done by volunteers, schools, community groups, business and industrial organisations to keep our towns and cities beautiful and litter free. They acknowledged 15 people in the Rotorua awards and out of that chose supreme winners from a corporate and community volunteer perspective. Gary Rikihana, a previous Housing New Zealand tenant, won the supreme community volunteer award for his role in the stream clean up.
"We think these awards are a great way to recognise the hard work that goes into making our cities beautiful" says Michelle Tiriana from the Community Renewal team. "It's the Fordlands community and volunteers like Gary Rikihana that make our job easier and more rewarding, so if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be able to do what we do."
