Income-related rent

Published: 9 February 2017

If you don’t have an income or you earn below a certain amount, you may be eligible for an income-related rent.

The Ministry of Social Development (external link) (MSD) is responsible for assessing eligibility for income-related rents.

How do I qualify

A low income is considered to be an income below the New Zealand Superannuation determined “single, living alone (external link) ” rate. If you qualify for income-related rent, the Government pays the difference between the rent you can pay and the normal market rates.

If you have any questions or want to talk through your options or eligibility you need to contact the Ministry of Social Development (external link) .
