Councils and Community Organisations - Overview

Councils, community groups and other non-Government organisations make a significant contribution to social housing in New Zealand.

Government agencies including Housing New Zealand and the Social Housing Unit (a semi-automonous unit within the Department of Building and Housing) collaborate with these organisations to provide more housing for New Zealanders on low incomes or with special housing needs.

Funding

The Social Housing Unit (SHU) was set up in July 2011, and in October, announced the availability of four new funds. The SHU will work with third sector providers, including iwi, that are largely self-sustaining and have the ability to draw on a range of external capabilities and sources of finance. It will provide funding, land or surplus state housing stock, or a combination of these, to support these groups to develop a mature social housing sector.

Legacy Lending

If you have queries about the Rural Housing Programme or a HIF/MDP loan approved prior to July 2011, contact Karen Hocking (phone: 04 439 3000). Social Housing providers interested in new lending should contact the SHU.

Community Group Housing

Community Group Housing is a service provided by Housing New Zealand Corporation (Housing New Zealand). The service provides rental homes for government-funded groups or organisations that provide residential community services.
