First stage of redeveloping state housing in Pomare underway

24 March 2011

Housing New Zealand has announced the start of a significant state housing redevelopment programme in the Hutt Valley suburb of Pomare.

“Housing New Zealand is committed to improving state housing in Pomare to ensure we have the right homes in the right place to help those in the greatest need of a state home,” chief operating officer Stephen McArthur said.

“At present, much of the state housing in the area does not work for households on our waiting list, and nor does the design and nature of the housing benefit the Pomare community. Over time, Housing New Zealand is going to change this, beginning with the demolition of up to 27 units on the corner of Farmer Crescent and High Street.

“Demand from people needing state housing in the Hutt Valley is for two bedroom and larger four or five bedroom properties. The 27 units we will demolish in the next few months are 50 years old and are all three bedroom properties, “ Mr McArthur said.

“There is an opportunity in Pomare to build something that works better for current and future households needing our help, and for the wider community.”

Out of the 27 units, 14 are empty and some have been vandalised which is a health and safety issue for neighbouring families.

Housing New Zealand is working with the remaining 13 tenants and their families to find them alternative accommodation, in line with its standard transfer procedures. Options could include staying in Pomare or going elsewhere, depending on what is available and meets their need.

“We have talked to the Hutt City Council, and local agencies about our plans and will continue to do so as these plans develop,” Mr McArthur said.

“We want to make sure any improvements to state housing in Pomare make a positive contribution to the work that the Hutt City Council and other agencies are doing to renew the area.”
