Demolition work to begin in Pomare

15 June 2011

Housing New Zealand is moving forward with redevelopment plans for its state housing in Pomare.

Work on demolishing 27 empty units on the corner of High Street and Farmers Crescent in Pomare will begin this week.

A broader redevelopment of state housing in Pomare is close to being finalised and the demolition of these units is the first stage, says Wellington Acting Regional Manager Symon Leggett.

“Demolition work will take approximately three weeks and once the site is cleared it will be grassed over and become an open space until redevelopment construction work can start which may still be some time away,” says Mr Leggett.

Housing New Zealand has been looking at how they will redevelop state housing in Pomare for the past of couple of years.

“Our role is to provide houses for those with the greatest need. We know those units do not meet the needs of those on the waiting lists in the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.

“Demand from our waiting list is for two and larger four or five bedroom properties, whereas these units are three bedroom properties,” says Mr Leggett.

“We have talked to the Hutt City Council, and local agencies about our plans and will continue to do so as these plans develop.

“We want to make sure any improvements to state housing in Pomare make a positive contribution to the work that the Hutt City Council and other agencies are doing in renewing the area.”
